This review is based on my first impression and a single group training session at Féroce Boxing & Muay Thai Gym, and reflects my thoughts stemming from those interactions.

Féroce Boxing & Muay Thai Gym

Féroce Boxing & Muay Thai Gym (Kuching)

Féroce Boxing & Muay Thai Gym in Kuching (Sarawak) strikes a unique balance between a professional training environment and a welcoming, enjoyable atmosphere. Whether you’re a seasoned competitor, a beginner, or a casual practitioner, the gym's impressive facilities and vibrant culture cater to a broad spectrum of needs.

What I enjoyed

✅ Well-organized, clean layout and well-maintained facilities

✅ A balance between fun and serious training setup

✅ Friendly and welcoming atmosphere

✅ felt like an ant in this huge space (OMG)

✅ Extensive equipment that covers strength training

Considerations

1-Facilities and Equipment :

  • Cleanliness

One of the standout aspects of Féroce Muay Thai Gym is its cleanliness. Hygiene is my top priority in any gym, as infections such as Staph can spread easily if hygiene is compromised. First impressions count, and I was pleased to find that the floor wasn’t sticky or grimy, and there was no unpleasant odor. That alone made me feel comfortable stepping in for my first session.

  • Ventilation: Ahhhh..cold air

Since the gym is located inside a mall, the gym benefits from a controlled climate. The air conditioning provided a comfortable training environment, though prolonged inactivity might lead to feeling chilled. However, when the workout intensifies, the cool air becomes a welcome relief.

  • How big is the space? ENORMOUS

Feroce Boxing & Muay Thai Gym is spread across three adjacent shop lots, each thoughtfully designed to accommodate various training needs. Upon entering the first building, you’re immediately greeted by two rings—a boxing ring and an MMA cage—positioned near the entrance. While the walkway between them is somewhat narrow, it’s refreshing to see a gym that caters to both Muay Thai and amateur MMA fighters.

The combination of 2nd & 3rd shop lots offers a large, open training space dedicated to Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and boxing. According to the one of the instructors, the space is sizable enough to accommodate multiple classes running simultaneously—a testament to the gym’s spacious layout. Plus point: High ceiling! It's a feature that I truly appreciate a lot. High ceiling = less claustrophobic

Boy! Love the high ceiling and neat layout.

  • Equipment - HOLY MOLY 26 heavy bags!

What stood out the most was the sheer number of punching bagsapproximately 26! The bags are spaced out well enough to prevent students from accidentally bumping into each other, a crucial factor in maintaining a smooth training experience. The variety of bags, including long, short, and belly bags, caters to different training needs and skill levels.

The bags are made of high-quality leather and feel just right—not too hard, not too soft—making for a comfortable yet effective striking experience. However, I found the Muay Thai kicking mitts to be particularly stiff, which made training a bit less enjoyable. It could be that my legs weren’t conditioned enough, or maybe the mitts just needed more breaking in (they looked old btw, yaya, I'm putting the blame on the pads). Either way, my shins took a beating!

I was pleasantly surprised to find that Feroce gym isn’t just about striking—it also offers extensive strength training equipment. They have air bikes, barbells, dumbbells, sandbags, and kettlebells, providing a well-rounded approach to conditioning.

A secret room? Whatt?

Even more intriguing is the hidden muscle gym (like a secret room)—a separate room equipped with barbell racks, weight machines, and other strength-training essentials. This addition makes Féroce a great choice for those looking to supplement their Muay Thai training with strength and conditioning work.

shhh...secret room

Changing Rooms & Amenities

There are 2 toilets within the gym, and they are spotless—no odors, no mess. Furthermore, its location within a mall offers easy access to additional, equally clean restrooms, a definite advantage. The mall itself is relatively quiet, ensuring clean and accessible facilities.

2-Atmosphere and Culture

  • Welcoming Environment

Walking into a new gym can feel intimidating (was praying hard upon approaching them), but Laura, the founder’s wife, immediately put me at ease with her warm and welcoming demeanor. Even with a small class size, the atmosphere felt friendly, inclusive, and motivating.

The gym’s setup itself adds to the excitement—the sheer number of punching bags made me want to HUGGGGG them! (LOL). The high-energy environment, combined with an enthusiastic instructor who kept the session lively and engaging, made the experience even more enjoyable. The Muay Thai group training sessions are designed to accommodate all fitness levels, making Féroce accessible to both beginners and seasoned fighters.

For a broader sense of the gym's culture during peak hours, their social media channels provide valuable insights.

  • What vibe does it project: Fun or Serious?

It’s a well-balanced mix of both. The presence of two rings at the entrance gives off a fighter’s gym vibe, which may seem intimidating to newcomers. Scary wei. However, the well-lit, spacious interior and the friendly instructors create a more relaxed and welcoming vibe. As I was there during the Ramadan month, the session only had 3 students. 3-Instructors:

  • Instructor Introduction:

Féroce Boxing & Muay Thai Gym has a team of coaches with varying levels of experience, including head coaches and assistant trainers. According to their brochure, some coaches used to be professional fighters and others have been involved in various competitions as well.

Here are the notable coaches:

Kevin, Jasmin, Sam, Laura, Ikram

Ikram led the group session I attended. As a young coach with experience in multiple martial arts disciplines, he has chosen Muay Thai as his primary focus.

  • Teaching Style

Based on my session, the instruction employed a “command and practice” teaching approach, where students observe, replicate, and refine their techniques under supervision. There was also a segment where we worked independently while receiving personalized feedback from the coach.

  • Instructor Attitude and Professionalism:

Despite being a walk-in non-member, my experience was pleasant. The instructors were courteous, warm, and most importantly, respectful. It’s always reassuring when a coach asks for permission before making any physical adjustments—a small but crucial detail in maintaining professionalism. Also, it was Ramadan day yet the coach maintained high energy and enthusiasm throughout the session, showing no signs of fatigue.

4-Class Structure & Activities / Curriculum

The class started on time and followed a structured format:

warm up

jogging & mini cone drills

agility & coordination

4 different ladder drills incorporated with elbow strikes, knee strikes

striking techniques

4 basic striking techniques-jab, cross,hook, uppercut,

circuit activities

4 stations - each with 1 functional activity / muay thai technique

  • Air Bike

  • Knee strikes

  • Tyre bouncing

  • Padding with coach (used all elements learnt)

The session was well-paced, offering a great balance between fitness conditioning and technique learning. There was sufficient rest time between exercises, ensuring that students could maintain proper form and energy throughout.

  • What was the objective of the session?

It wasn’t immediately clear, but as the class progressed, I realized it was designed as a complete workout infused with fundamental Muay Thai elements—an introduction to the sport’s basic striking techniques. It would have been helpful if the objective of the class had been explained at the beginning to give better clarity on what to expect.

  • Are the activities progressively developed throughout the year?

Due to the mixed-level nature of group classes, it's difficult to assess long-term progressive development. However, the primary goal of group classes appears to be the development of fundamental Muay Thai tactics and techniques, including striking, clinching, kicking, and kneeing.Coaches also tailor the sessions to accommodate varying skill levels.

Observations from their Instagram videos suggest that classes often incorporate:-

  • Circuit-based training, where students rotate through different stations

  • Partnered drills

  • One-on-one sessions (doing circuits activities) with coaches, providing an opportunity to go all out and test power and technique

For those advanced in their skills and want to compete, Féroce Boxing & Muay Thai Gym (Kuching) also provides fighters sparring schedules.

Perasan moment : There was a fighter chuckled at me when I couldn't keep up with the tyre bouncing training. So fighter training is legit

5-Fun Fact (According to the Founder):

A curious detail I discovered during my research is that Google Maps displays a similar name to Féroce, which is Beyoncé! According to the founder, this is a Google error. The gym's name is Féroce, derived from the French word for "fierce," and not the latter.
